Visual Field Loss Progression after Macular Hole Surgery
نویسندگان
چکیده
Purpose. To report a patient who experienced visual field loss progression after vitrectomy for an idiopathic stage II macular hole. Methods. Case report. A 68-year-old woman, with no history of glaucoma or any neuroophthalmological diseases, underwent a vitrectomy for a macular hole. Results. The patient showed macular hole closure and a resulting central visual acuity of 20/20. However, two months after surgery, she developed an inferotemporal visual field defect. Moreover, seven months after surgery, the patient noticed an enlargement of the temporal blind area: a nearly complete temporal defect was confirmed on visual field testing. Conclusions. Although the beneficial results of successfully treated macular holes are unquestionable, this report raises the possibility that visual field defects following macular hole surgery may be progressive.

Macular hole surgery-associated peripheral visual field loss.
To examine in more detail the peripheral visual field loss after macular hole surgery, we reviewed a series of 38 consecutive patients (44 eyes) with idiopathic macular hole who underwent vitrectomy and fluid-gas exchange. Ten (22.7%) eyes of 9 patients developed peripheral visual field loss shortly after successful surgery. This complication was characterized by mild to moderate wedge-shaped v...
متن کاملPrevention of visual field defects after macular hole surgery.
BACKGROUND/AIM The pathogenesis of visual field loss associated with macular hole surgery is uncertain but a number of explanations have been proposed, the most convincing of which is the effect of peeling of the posterior hyaloid, causing either direct damage to the nerve fibre layer or to its blood supply at the optic nerve head. The purpose of this preliminary prospective study was to determ...

AIM To prospectively evaluate peripheral visual fields after vitrectomy for idiopathic macular holes. METHODS Goldmann perimetry was performed in 105 patients before, as well as 6 weeks and 12 months after macular hole surgery. RESULTS Only one patient (< 1%) with a stage III macular hole developed an asymptomatic postoperative visual field defect. The scotoma was wedge-shaped, peripherally...
متن کاملRetrospective study on outcome of macular hole surgery.
INTRODUCTION Macular hole is a common and treatable cause of central visual loss. Classic macular hole surgery consists of vitrectomy, posterior vitreous cortex removal and intraocular gas tamponade, but during the past decade focus has especially been on internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling as adjuvant therapy for increasing closure rates. OBJECTIVE To determine and evaluate anatomical a...
متن کاملMetamorphopsia assessment before and after vitrectomy for macular hole.
PURPOSE To evaluate the degree of metamorphopsia in 42 patients before and 6 months after vitrectomy for idiopathic unilateral macular hole. METHODS Semicircular test and reference stimuli of variable diameters were applied in a binocular test that measured interocular size disparity in patients with unilateral macular hole. The test was applied 1 day before surgery and repeated after 6 month...
